Every since I decided to embark upon this journey in sports journalism some five years ago, I’ve repeatedly heard one constant — diversity. It’s something that newsrooms are making a valiant effort to achieve. Whether it’s race, gender or age, having different voices in the media is something that is wanted and very much needed. For me, working in sports, it’s definitely something that needs to improve. Granted, progress is being made, however, for the three major sports — NBA, NFL and MLB, where minorites dominate the playing field, it is imperative that those who cover them at least reflect the demographic of the beat.
In this blog, just as the title states, I hope to examine race and the sports media, looking at how race influences sports coverage and how different media outlets approach diversity and apply that to their coverage of some of the world’s greatest athletes.
